Considering that we’re living in an age where attention spans are so short – releasing a nine and a half minute song is pretty audacious – but Kurt Vile is pretty much someone who can pull it off.
Ever since his breakthrough record Smoke Rings Round My Halo, Vile has perfected a sort of alt country style, with shades of 90’s indie thrown in the mix. Wakin’ on a Pretty Day just cements his reputation (oh, and for the record the new album is called Wakin on a Pretty Daze – his impish sense of humour is intact). But despite its nine minute running time Wakin never becomes boring. Probably not something a newcomer to Vile’s work may not instantly get it, but the fans will lap it up. Vile has a way of exuding serenity in his songs, and this comes out extremely nicely, so the song’s length gives him ample time to tease out his best qualities.
It’s siginificant to see how far Vile has gone. Back in the mid 00’s a lot of his recordings were simply lo-fi experiemnts, and now he’s gone and recorded one massive long psychedelic alt country groover, and possibly one of the tracks of 2013 to boot.
